How to import the QBO file into QuickBooks

QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions, then Bank transactions.
  2. Open the Link account menu and choose Upload from file.
  3. Select the .qbo file you downloaded here.
  4. Pick the QuickBooks account the transactions belong to.
  5. Review the transactions in the For review tab and add or match them.

QuickBooks Desktop

  1. Back up your company file first.
  2. Go to File, then Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files.
  3. Select the .qbo file you downloaded here.
  4. Choose an existing account or create a new one.
  5. Review the transactions in the Bank Feeds Center.

If the account is already connected to online banking, QuickBooks Desktop may ask you to disconnect it before importing.

QFX and QBO are almost the same file

Banks build QFX files for Quicken and QBO files for QuickBooks from the same transaction data. Both carry an Intuit bank ID, and QuickBooks Desktop checks that ID before it imports anything.

Renaming a .qfx file to .qbo works for some banks, but QuickBooks rejects the file when the ID inside isn't one it accepts for Web Connect. Converting writes a proper QBO file with a supported bank ID and the right account type, so you don't have to guess.

Moving from Quicken to QuickBooks

If you're switching software, download QFX files for the period you need from your bank, convert each one here, and import them into the matching QuickBooks accounts. For older history exported from Quicken itself, use the QIF to QBO converter.

Questions

What is a QFX file?

QFX, or Quicken Web Connect, is the file your bank gives you for Quicken. It's based on the OFX banking format.

Can I just rename a .qfx file to .qbo?

Sometimes. It fails when the bank ID inside the file isn't one QuickBooks accepts. Converting here sets a supported ID, so the import goes through.

Will I get duplicate transactions?

No. The original transaction IDs from your bank are kept, so QuickBooks skips anything it has already imported.

Does it work with credit card QFX files?

Yes. The account type is read from the file, and you can change it before downloading.

Is my data safe?

Your file is read and converted inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to a server, so nobody else can see your transactions.
