How to import the QBO file into QuickBooks

QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions, then Bank transactions.
  2. Open the Link account menu and choose Upload from file.
  3. Select the .qbo file you downloaded here.
  4. Pick the QuickBooks account the transactions belong to.
  5. Review the transactions in the For review tab and add or match them.

QuickBooks Desktop

  1. Back up your company file first.
  2. Go to File, then Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files.
  3. Select the .qbo file you downloaded here.
  4. Choose an existing account or create a new one.
  5. Review the transactions in the Bank Feeds Center.

If the account is already connected to online banking, QuickBooks Desktop may ask you to disconnect it before importing.

Moving from Quicken or Microsoft Money to QuickBooks

Export each account from Quicken or Money as a QIF file, convert it here, and import it into the matching QuickBooks account. If your QIF file holds several accounts, choose which one to convert and repeat for the others.

QuickBooks receives the date, payee, amount, memo and check number of every transaction. Quicken categories are added to the memo so you can see them while you categorize in QuickBooks, since QuickBooks uses its own chart of accounts. Split transactions come through as a single total.

Questions

What is a QIF file?

QIF, or Quicken Interchange Format, is an older plain-text format for financial data. Quicken, Microsoft Money and many banks can export it.

Are my Quicken categories kept?

They're added to each transaction's memo. QuickBooks doesn't import categories from bank files, so you'll assign accounts in bank feeds as usual.

My dates look wrong. What should I do?

Set "Date format in your file" to day first or month first. QIF files don't say which they use, so the converter guesses from the dates it finds.

Can I convert investment accounts?

Not yet. Bank, cash and credit card accounts are supported. Investment accounts in the file are skipped.

Is my data safe?

Your file is read and converted inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to a server, so nobody else can see your transactions.
